Declan Rice, a Future Great?

Declan Rice has had a meteoric rise in the footballing world since his debut for West Ham United.

The young star has become the first name in Manuel Pellegrini’s side with his sturdy performances as a holding-midfielder. In light of his outstanding form since his debut Rice has been called up and made his international debut for Republic of Ireland.

Controversially however, since his form and quality has improved he has switched his international allegiances to England. Declan Rice will be hoping to follow in another West Ham legend’s footsteps, Bobby Moore,  and lead England to glory and lift a trophy for the first time since 1966.

Rice however, has not always known success. Aged 14, he was released from Chelsea youth academy. He then joined West Ham and was stuck behind fellow young star Reece Oxford. Despite being the same age as Oxford Rice had to wait to make his Hammers debut, two years after Oxford. Even once he forced himself into the West Ham team as a centre-back he endured a tough start due to being part of the worst defence in the Premier League 2017/18 season.

Once he made the change from defence he has not looked back. Rice, when compared to West Ham’s Pedro Obiang, their best midfielder in Rice’s breakthrough season, he comes out on top in every department. Rice has made more interceptions, blocks and clearances then the Equatoguinean midfielder.

Rice has shown he is more than a defender this season, scoring two vital goals. Rice scored against Newcastle and the winner against London rivals Arsenal. The goal against the Gunners was a tidy finish too, Rice curled the ball into the top corner from about 16 yards.

West Ham fans who have seen these displays will hope he stays at the London stadium for the rest of career. This could become tricky however if Pep Guardiola, Manchester City manager, has his way. The Spaniard is rumoured to want Rice to replace 33 year-old Brazilian Fernandinho in the Citizens midfield. The Hammers fans should have some hope as Rice signed a long-term contract at West Ham earlier this season.

If Declan Rice continues his brilliant form and impress on international duty then he could be making a big move soon. Furthermore, Rice could be the leader of England’s current crop of young stars that includes Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho, Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold and Leicester’s Ben Chilwell.

“I’ve had the support from the fans, from the players and from the manager and now, to get it done and commit myself to this Club is a very special moment.” Declan Rice speaking to West Ham United.

Rice is on course to achieve his enormous potential and if he carries on as he is then it could be exciting times to be an England fan. Rice has all the characteristics to captain England to glory.

Could Declan Rice be the nest great England player?
